Mathematical statistics is the application of probability theory, a branch of mathematics, to statistics, as opposed to techniques for collecting statistical data. Specific mathematical techniques which are used for this include mathematical analysis, linear algebra, stochastic analysis, differential equations, and measure theory.

Data analysis is divided into two parts as mentioned below:
  • Descriptive statistics – The part of statistics that describes data, i.e., summarizes the data and their typical properties.
  • Inferential statistics – The part of statistics that draws conclusions from data (using some model for the data): For example, inferential statistics involves selecting a model for the data.

Mathematical statistics is the study of statistics from a mathematical standpoint, using probability theory as well as other branches of mathematics such as linear algebra and analysis. Statistics deals with gaining information from data. In practice, data often contain some randomness or uncertainty. Whereas Mathematics includes the study of such topics as quantity, structure (algebra), space (geometry), and change (analysis). It has no generally accepted definition.
